Waddell Beach: The Other Side of Fairy Land

Waddell Beach is on the bottom and West side of Big Basin Redwoods. We like to think of Big Basin Redwoods as Fairy Land as we halfway expect to see fairies flitting amongst the massive redwoods. From Big Basin, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, one can hike all the way down to Waddell Beach.

Waddell Beach

Waddell Beach is just off Hwy 1, about 20 miles North of Santa Cruz on the Northern California Coast. It’s known internationally as a great place for wind and kite surfing, due to the winds. Waddell Creek, that gives the beach its name, is home to a great many birds. Theodore J. Hoover Natural Preserve is located on the creek just East of Hwy 1. It is a coastal freshwater marsh and home to many rare species.

Here are a few of our photos. I hope they give you the urge to go visit this beautiful beach.

In all, it was a wonderful place to visit. We were there on a foggy weekday and there was almost no one else on the beach but us and the birds.
