While it’s a holiday for some, for the rest it’s another Manic Monday and some humor is certainly needed. I’ve heard it said that cats are aliens. They are certainly strange… and funny.
Two years ago today, Lastech and I made an important decision. We quit smoking. I had wanted to quit, but Lastech wasn’t there yet and I wasn’t going to bug him. I brought home a book from the library. It was called The Easy Way To Stop Smoking by Allen Carr, and it was a short and easy read. Lastech started reading it while I was cooking. I read it the next day. The day after that, we had our last smoke. We have had two years of freedom and no intention of ever lighting up again. 🙂 Hooray for us.  If you wish to read the book, your library will probably have it. Most of them do. The price at Amazon is fairly cheap, as hardcovers go (see link). While the method in the book is cold turkey, it doesn’t matter. It’s a very good read even with nic replacement. In the end, it doesn’t matter how you quit.
I wouldn’t remember the day we quit smoking except that the day before (August 1st) was my mom’s birthday. She is now an octogenarian. Happy birthday to mom!
Now for some humor to celebrate the day.
This is what can happen to the human tin opener.
Gotta have a dog in here.
Last, but not least is a wonderful but strange video about sheep.
Today is Mother’s Day, and we think that mothers should certainly be honored. However, there are a LOT of mums out there who haven’t given birth or adopted, or raised human children. These women who nurture animals or the children of others deserve just as much honor on this day. With that in mind, we would like to honor a friend of this blog.
Her username is flumptytail and she’s mum to a human and LOTS of kitties. She rescues ferals, and has them spayed and neutered. She also takes them for regular checkups, teeth cleaning and various things. Once healthy, they have the run of her home, indoors and out. They are free to come and go as they wish. She has made many of our brothers and sisters very happy kitties.
How many kitties call her mum? Well, according to flumpty:
I have 32, 34 if you count the 2 that belong to someone else. I had said 28 before , but that was just a quickie list and I had left off some that I hardly ever see. They just come in once a day for a few minutes to eat and disappear again. Although by now there’s only one who never stays in all night.
Here are some of her kitties.
This first picture, according to flumpty:
I keep a big cage in the dining room for when I have to keep a cat in it overnight if they’re getting neutered or spayed or their teeth cleaned, etc. in the morning. I leave the door open other times and the cats like to sleep in in. Here is a picture of a pile of kittehs.

Not to worry. We love our mum too. We gave her head bonks and left our toys in her shoes for her to find.
The cats have been feeling their oats lately, playing just a bit more vigorously than usual and sleeping just as hard…
We’ve been going out more and more ourselves, spending most of this past Saturday at Golden Gate Park, starting with grilled fish, shrimp and carne asada in the meadow across from Mallard Lake. We had marinated the shrimp in a mix of Clementine-tangerine juice mixed with lime juice, brown sugar, thinly sliced shallots and shredded ginger which all came out deliciously fresh tasting.
Filets of sole and carne asada, with blackened seasoning on the fish.
Grilled peppers and beer, dried bread crumbs for our hosts.
Three hours later, we took a stroll around Mallard Lake where we saw this beautiful Blue Heron:
Looking for parking around the Arboretum, I decided to drive around Stow Lake where we saw these geese with their goslings:
Finally, the arboretum with so many flowers in bloom:
One way the final take over could go is gradual, with cats making more and more non-aggressive displays of domination, as in diplomatic cuteness when asking for food or attention, like so:
This type of display is not unique:
Like Dr. Hubbs in “Phase IV”, we are now reduced to documenting and surrendering to the revolting affectations of cuteness. Well better that than the alternative…
Lo, they’ll soon be reading books…
A final note, this absolutely incredible story of survival, this dog found at sea three weeks after the tsunami in Japan. Three weeks.
Wow! The dog has now been reunited with his owner. 🙂
A friend of mine, who posts elsewhere, posted about this. Her username is effervescent and she lives up to it. Her post was about Yoga, but I’m stealing the kitty bits. The original post was centered around quitting smoking and coping methods. Yes, I’m a quitter and proud of it. Actually, Lastech and I are both quitters. She gets full credit though for this post though. I must add that the first LOL pic is also from the quitters section. I don’t know if it was made for our group or not. No matter, it’s quite wonderful and I love it. If or when, I know for sure, I’ll update to give credit where it is due.
