Point Reyes: The Wildlife

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about our trip to Point Reyes National Seashore and the lighthouse. This time, I thought I would share a few photos of the wildlife we saw.

Point Reyes has a vast amount of wildlife. It’s a wonderful site for bird watching, whale watching and more.

The first area we stopped was near the Bear Valley Visitor Center. There, we picked up a map and walked around the earthquake trail and then we had a sandwich in the picnic grounds.

Later, after our visit to the lighthouse, we took the trail out the Elephant Seal overlook. There weren’t many, but we got to see a few. We heard them long before we saw them.

On our way from the overlook to the main road, we came across a herd of dairy cows. There are quite a few cattle ranches on Point Reyes, so it pays to drive cautiously as they wander into the road.

Moooooo! She wasn’t in a hurry to get out of our way. We just waited patiently.

On the northern part of Point Reyes at Tomales Point, you can find Tule Elk. There were hunted almost to extinction by 1855. In 1978, they were reintroduced to Point Reyes. A preserve was set aside for them on Tomales Point and the herd is now about 600 strong. My photo isn’t the best as it was getting late in the day and they were quite a distance away.
