San Francisco is an extremely pet friendly city and it shows. On any given day, we can find scores of dog walkers at the various parks with their furry charges. Since we live fairly close to McLaren Park, we like to go visit the duck pond and watch the dogs swimming and playing.
Sadly, our shelters are overflowing with dogs and cats. The economy has been as hard our our furry companions as it has on the rest of us. If you are unable to adopt a homeless animal, do consider donating food, blankets, toys or anything else that your shelter might need. I will provide a few links to some local shelters. Please check on the shelters in your area. Most of our shelters are no-kill, but that is not the case everywhere.
During our park visits we have found an vast array of dogs from purebreds to mutts. All of them appeared to be having a good deal of fun.
At the top of the hill above the pond is a big grassy area where the dogs are free to run and play fetch and have a great time while remaining dry. Here are a few of those happy dogs.
Here is a short list of local shelters. If you can find it in your heart and pocketbook to donate, please do so. They need all the help they can get.
San Francisco Animal Care & Control
Wonder Dog Rescue (small dogs)
Those are just a few of our shelters. There are many more and a more extensive list can be found here.
In addition, Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah rescues animals who are victims of natural distasters and war. They also adopt many animals that are considered non adoptable by most shelters, thus saving them from euthanasia. They are a wonderful shelter and they have many animals who need a forever home.
