The other day, we escaped the apartment and went to Golden Gate Park. While there, we took a stroll around Lloyd Lake. Please join me for some pretty scenery and a bit of history about this small jewel in the park.
Lloyd Lake is located on John F. Kennedy Drive just West of Transverse Drive. You can find a map here (pdf).
It’s not the largest of the lakes. It may not be the prettiest, in some views. I think it’s just peachy.
Portals to the Past is an odd, but lovely monument in Golden Gate Park. It once stood on Nob Hill as part of a home owned by A. N. Towne. After the earthquake of 1906, the portico was all that remained standing. It was donated to the park and placed by the lake as a symbol of the perseverance of the people of San Francisco. The Portals to the Past is also mentioned in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. While not in the film, the place is described very accurately.
It’s not the largest of the lakes. It may not be the prettiest, in some views. I think it’s just peachy. It is always calm and there are few people there. There is a small waterfall on the East side of the lake. You can follow a path all the way around the lake. It is home to a variety of birds. There are muscovy ducks, ring neck ducks, mallards, geese, egrets, and sea gulls.
do you have any other photos of the muscovy ducks? i am friendly with them and have thought them to be very young and your pix confirm that. would like to see more.
thank you
