Winter is coming soon and with it will come the rains. I love the rain. That might be because I grew up in the desert, but no matter. Hubby and I are just as happy to walk in the rain as we are walking in the sun. Actually we prefer the rain
Twofer Tuesday and More Sculpture Fun
I’m guilty of going off on tangents. Yesterday, in Manic Monday, I featured artist Janet Echelman. That led me to find a couple of other bits of art and artists worth mentioning.
The first is a bit of kinetic sculpture by Theo Jansen. He has designed sculptures in the shape of bizarre animals that can walk by way of wind power.
According to Wikipedia:
Theo Jansen has been creating wind-walking examples of artificial life since 1990. What was at first a rudimentary breed has slowly evolved into a generation of machines that are able to react to their environment: “over time, these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements such as storms and water, and eventually I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.”
Constructed as intricate assemblages of piping, wood, and wing-like sails, Jansen’s creatures are constantly evolving and have become excellently adapted to their sandy beach environment. The creatures sport legs, which “prove to be more efficient on sand than wheels…they don’t need to touch every inch of the ground along the way, as a wheel has to”.
The other fascinating sculpture I found was the Singing Ringing Tree in Burnley, England. The sculpture was designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu.
Manic Monday with Sculpture
I usually post a bit of humor on Mondays to start the week. Instead, I’m posting a bit of art. I was off surfing the videos at TED, when I came across a talk by sculptor Janet Echelman. Her work is beautiful and her talk is inspiring.

Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic at Golden Gate Park, October 2011
Yesterday, Lastech and I got up very early. We went out to watch the sunrise, raid the donut shop, and then go see a lot of old cars. Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park is a feast for the car lover’s eyes. The cost was $40 to show a car and free for anyone walking in to enjoy looking at them.
According to the website:
Jimmy’s Annual Old Car Picnic started in 1988 when classic car-loving friends got together in Golden Gate Park to celebrate Jimmy O’Keefe’s birthday. It has since grown into the largest and longest-running show of its kind in San Francisco and includes cars, trucks, and motorcycles of all types, as well as a good number of oddballs….
From the beginning, Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic has been a benefit for people with Developmental Disabilities. The proceeds go to The Janet Pomeroy Center and The Portrero Hill Neighborhood House in San Francisco.
The following video is a slideshow of photos taken by Lastech and I.
Waddell Beach: The Other Side of Fairy Land
Waddell Beach is on the bottom and West side of Big Basin Redwoods. We like to think of Big Basin Redwoods as Fairy Land as we halfway expect to see fairies flitting amongst the massive redwoods. From Big Basin, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, one can hike all the way down to Waddell Beach.

Wednesday Has Gone to the Dogs
Another Wednesday rolls around. It’s midweek and it’s all downhill from here to the weekend. I decided that although we usually post cat stuff, it’s time for the dogs to have their day. For your Wednesday entertainment, I present the doggie talent show.
Trees and Fog
San Francisco is famous for its fog. Although it makes summertime a bit on the cold side, we enjoy the fog and the smell of wet trees and grass. Here are three photos by Lastech that I’m rather fond of. He took them one morning when we were out at Land’s End.
For the record, this was late, thanks to PG&E. Just as I was about to post, the power went off. It just came back on.
Manic Monday: Cat vs Dog
Another manic Monday has rolled around. If some of you are lucky, it’s a holiday for you. For the rest of us, it’s the same ole Monday.
For a laugh or two to get through the day, I present you with some cat vs dog.
SQUIRREL!!!! I couldn’t resist this vid of a squirrel with real chutzpah.
Here’s a bonus picture. It’s just too cute.
