I need a lot more practice, but I managed to grab a few night shots of the Embarcadero and San Francisco’s skyline from the pier.
The Embarcadero sits on what was originally Yerba Buena Cove. As the city grew, the cove was filled in and a sea wall was built. The famous San Francisco Ferry Building with it’s memorable clock tower is located there. Before Bay Bridge opened for traffic in 1936, it was one of the busiest areas for foot traffic in the world.
According to Wikipedia:
…only Charing Cross Station in London and Grand Central Terminal in New York City were busier
In my opinion, the centerpiece of the Embarcadero is the Ferry Building. It was built in 1898. It somehow managed to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire as well as the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. It has since been fully restored and renovated.
According to Wikipedia:
In 2003, the building reopened as an upscale gourmet marketplace, office building, and re-dedicated ferry terminal. The restoration project spanned several years, with an emphasis on recreating the building’s 1898 ambiance. San Francisco’s most well known farmers’ market is held there on Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am – 2pm, year-round.
